Visit Jubilee Pool, Penzance

Perched on the edge of the sea in Penzance, Jubilee Pool is one of Cornwall’s most iconic landmarks, a striking art deco lido that has been part of local life since the 1930s. With its distinctive white curves and sweeping views across Mount’s Bay, it’s the perfect place to swim, relax, and soak up the atmosphere of Cornwall’s coast.

A piece of art deco history

Opened in 1935 to mark King George V’s Silver Jubilee, the pool was designed to make the most of its dramatic seaside setting. Its elegant geometric shape and curved sea walls reflect the clean, modern style of the art deco period. For generations, it’s been a favourite summer spot for both locals and visitors, offering a safe, sheltered place to enjoy the sea.

Swimming by the sea

Fed with seawater and refreshed naturally by the tides, Jubilee Pool gives you the thrill of open-air swimming with all the comfort of a managed space. On calm days, the water sparkles a beautiful turquoise, while during wilder weather the waves crash against the outer walls, reminding you just how close you are to the Atlantic.

There’s plenty of space for everyone, families paddling in the shallows, swimmers gliding lengths in the deeper section, and sunbathers relaxing along the edges. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer season, and facilities include changing rooms, showers, and a café serving locally sourced food and drinks.

The geothermal pool

In 2020, Jubilee Pool became home to one of the UK’s first geothermal sea-water pools. Heated by natural energy from deep underground, the geothermal section stays at around 30–35°C, making it perfect for year-round bathing. Sitting in the warm water while looking out to sea is a wonderfully unique experience, especially on a crisp winter morning.

A community-owned landmark

Jubilee Pool is run by a community social enterprise, meaning every visit supports its ongoing upkeep and development. The team also hosts events throughout the year, from yoga sessions and live music to open-air cinema nights and art workshops. It’s a place that feels alive with creativity, history, and local pride.

Visiting information

The pool is open most of the year, with seasonal variations for the main and geothermal pools. Tickets can be booked online or purchased on arrival, and family passes are available. There’s parking nearby, and the seafront location makes it easy to combine a swim with a walk along Penzance promenade or lunch in one of the town’s many cafés.

Final thoughts

Jubilee Pool is more than just a place to swim, it’s a slice of Cornish history, a celebration of community, and one of the most scenic spots in Penzance. Whether you take a refreshing dip in the sea-fed lido or unwind in the geothermal pool, it’s an experience that perfectly captures the spirit of Cornwall’s coast.

Top tip:

Battery Rocks form a rugged headland in Penzance, nestled between the historic South Pier and Jubilee Pool. It’s also one of the best snorkelling spots in west Cornwall. Check out this video I filmed in July 2025, the colours and variety of marine life here are truly incredible.
