Eating in Penzance
Where can I buy a traditional Cornish pasty in Penzance?
Independent bakeries around the town centre and Market Jew Street sell fresh pasties daily, a reliable, easy option to eat on the move.
You can get a great pasty anywhere in Penzance, but my personal go-to is The Cornish Oven, with branches in Eastern Green and Hayle. I love a flaky pastry steak pasty, and don’t tell anyone, but I’m partial to a bit of tomato ketchup with mine.
Where is the best place to eat fresh seafood?
Penzance and Newlyn are home to some standout seafood spots recognised by the Michelin Guide, including The Shore in Penzance, and Argoe and the Tolcarne Inn in Newlyn, all celebrated for serving hyper-local catches straight from the waters nearby.
We’ve eaten at Argoe twice, and my wife has been to the Tolcarne Inn a couple of times too, though we haven’t managed to get to the Shore yet. We’ve also eaten at Mackerel Sky several times, and all of these restaurants offer exceptional quality seafood.
Can you buy fresh catches right off the Newlyn boat?
Yes, Newlyn’s working harbour means fresh fish sold close to where it lands is a genuine local perk, whether from a fishmonger in town or occasionally direct from the quayside.

Is cream tea served jam-first or cream-first here?
Jam first, then cream, the Cornish way. Doing it the other way round, cream first, is the Devon method, and you won’t win that argument locally.
That said, I actually do it the Devon way, I prefer a solid cream foundation to spread the jam onto. Controversial, I know 🙂
Where can I get locally made Cornish ice cream?
Cafes and kiosks around the town centre and seafront stock local Cornish dairy ice cream, a natural stop on a walk along the promenade.
Willy Wallers Ice Cream Factory in Penzance and Jelbert’s in Newlyn are your go-to spots for delicious ice cream on a hot, sunny day.
