Penzance is the working town at the end of the line, less polished than St Ives, less precious than Padstow, and all the more interesting for it. It’s also the gateway to St Michael’s Mount and the Isles of Scilly, home to a geothermally heated art deco lido, and the birthplace of a scientist, a rich philanthropist, and an entire art movement.

Here’s everything people actually ask about Penzance, plus a short video below that I shot back in April 2021.

Landmarks & Visitor Basics

Start here for the big landmarks and the questions everyone asks before they arrive.

How far is St Michael’s Mount from Penzance?

St Michael’s Mount sits just off Marazion, around 3 miles from Penzance, easily visible from the promenade.

Is the Jubilee Pool geothermally heated?

Part of it, yes. Alongside the main unheated seawater lido, a geothermal pool added in 2018 is heated to around 35°C using heat drawn from deep underground, a genuine UK first.

History, Myths & Culture

Penzance’s story runs from real historical piracy to a fictional operetta that borrowed its name.

Is The Pirates of Penzance based on a real story?

No, Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera is entirely fictional. They borrowed the town’s evocative name rather than any specific historical event, though Cornwall’s coast did see genuine piracy and smuggling in earlier centuries.

What is the Golowan Festival?

Penzance’s revived midsummer festival, a week-long celebration of Cornish culture, music, and street theatre, building up to its centrepiece, Mazey Day.

Getting to & Around Penzance

As the end of the mainline railway, Penzance is genuinely well connected for somewhere this far west.

How do you get to the Isles of Scilly from Penzance?

By the Scillonian III ferry from Penzance Harbour, taking around 2 hours 40 minutes, or by helicopter from Penzance Heliport, or by small plane from nearby Land’s End Airport.

How long is the train ride from London Paddington to Penzance?

Around 5 hours on a direct service, one of the longest continuous train journeys in the UK, and genuinely scenic for the final stretch along the south Cornwall coast.

Food, Drink & Shopping

With Newlyn’s fishing fleet right next door, Penzance eats better than its size might suggest.

Can you buy fresh catches right off the Newlyn boat?

Yes, Newlyn is one of England’s most important fishing ports, and fresh fish sold close to where it lands is one of the genuine perks of staying in the Penzance area.

Is cream tea served jam-first or cream-first here?

Jam first, then cream, the Cornish way. Doing it the other way round is the Devon method, and you won’t win that argument locally.

Nature, Beaches & Outdoors

Penzance itself isn’t a big sandy-beach town, but the coastline either side of it is genuinely spectacular.

Can you swim off Battery Rocks year-round?

Yes, sea swimmers use Battery Rocks throughout the year, a genuine local tradition alongside the more sheltered option of the Jubilee Pool next door.

Are seals or dolphins often seen in Mount’s Bay?

Yes, both are regularly spotted in Mount’s Bay, particularly from the coast path or on a boat trip, though sightings are never guaranteed on any given day.
