Mousehole

Mousehole

Mousehole is often described as one of the most beautiful villages in England, situated on the western shore of Mount’s Bay near Penzance.

The village is famously huddled around a historic granite harbour, which features a narrow entrance that can be closed with heavy wooden beams to protect the fishing fleet from fierce winter gales. Historically, Mousehole was a significant port and was the only village in the area to survive a devastating raid by the Spanish Armada in 1595, with the “Keigwin Arms” still standing as a testament to that era.

The village is also the setting for the beloved legend of Tom Bawcock, a local fisherman who saved the community from famine, an event still celebrated every December with the baking of the iconic “Starzy Gazey” pie. Today, the village remains a labyrinth of narrow, winding lanes and tiny cottages that lead down to the sheltered waters of the harbour.

While it is renowned for its spectacular Christmas light display, Mousehole attracts visitors year-round who come to enjoy its timeless atmosphere, independent art galleries, and the serene beauty of the Cornish coastline.
