Tolcarne Inn
Nestled right next to the sea wall in the historic fishing port of Newlyn, The Tolcarne Inn is a 300-year-old maritime pub that has become one of Cornwall’s premier dining destinations.
Under the leadership of Michelin-starred chef Ben Tunnicliffe, the inn has shed its traditional “pub grub” image to become a sophisticated seafood sanctuary. Despite its culinary accolades, it remains a true community local at heart, featuring flagstone floors, low-beamed ceilings, and a relaxed atmosphere where the day’s menu is simply handwritten on a chalkboard based on what was landed at the market that morning.
Dining & Cuisine
The Tolcarne Inn offers a seasonal, produce-led menu where the proximity to Newlyn’s famous fish market is the undisputed star of the show.
- The Menu: The offering changes daily to ensure maximum freshness. Expect deceptively simple yet technically perfect dishes such as hake with butter beans and chorizo, lemon sole with caper butter, or Newlyn crab on sourdough. While seafood dominates, the kitchen also prepares exceptional Cornish meat and seasonal vegetarian plates.
- Michelin Recognised: The inn holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, a testament to Ben Tunnicliffe’s ability to deliver high-quality cooking at an accessible price point in a completely unpretentious setting.
- The Bar: Staying true to its roots, the bar serves a fine selection of local ales and ciders. The wine list is thoughtfully curated to pair perfectly with the delicate and varied flavors of the daily seafood catch.
- The Vibe: It is authentic, warm, and bustling. It’s a place where food enthusiasts from across the country sit alongside local fishermen, all drawn by the shared love of honest, world-class cooking.

Accessibility
The Tolcarne Inn is a historic building, but the main dining and bar areas are located on the ground floor with relatively level access from the street. While the interior features traditional flagstone floors which can be slightly uneven, the layout is generally manageable for those with limited mobility. Please note that as a 17th-century building, some doorways and corridors are narrow. Public parking is available in the large Newlyn harbor car parks just a short, flat walk away from the inn.
