Mackeral Sky
Located in the heart of the bustling fishing port of Newlyn, Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar is a celebrated destination for lovers of exceptionally fresh, local seafood.
Established in 2015 by Nina and Jamie MacLean, this intimate “seafood bar” has earned a loyal following for its creative, tapas-style approach to Cornish fish.
Situated just stones-throw from one of the UK’s largest fishing fleets, the restaurant offers a vibrant, informal atmosphere where the “catch of the day” truly means it was landed only hours before arriving on your plate.
Visited 18/03/26
We have visited Mackerel Sky three times now, and it has become a family tradition. Every time my sister visits Cornwall, this is her first request, and we are always more than happy to join her. The food is consistently outstanding. If you are a seafood lover visiting Newlyn, a stop here is an absolute must.
Take a look at the photos above to see the incredible dishes we ordered:
- Mackerel, grilled with beetroot and horseradish
- Smoked white fish and corn chowder
- Panko Monkfish burger, seaweed aioli, baby gem
- Crispy squid, seaweed aioli
- Fries
Absolutely delicious!
Mackerel Sky operates a walk-in policy, and while we were lucky enough to be seated immediately, the restaurant was completely full within 15 minutes. If you are visiting during the busy holiday season, be prepared for a short wait; but we can safely say the food is well worth the queue.
The Food & Concept
The menu at Mackerel Sky is designed around “taster” plates, encouraging guests to sample a variety of textures and flavours from the surrounding waters.
- Tapas-Style Dining: The menu features small, expertly prepared plates. It is recommended to order two to three dishes per person to create a full meal.
- Signature Dishes: Must-try items include the Crispy Lemon Sole with Katsu Curry Sauce, the legendary Crab Nachos, and Scallops served with Hog’s Pudding and Hazelnut Dukkah.
- Hyper-Local Sourcing: Fish is sourced directly from Newlyn Harbour and the local fish market, with suppliers often delivering fresh catch multiple times a day to meet demand.
- Seasonal Specials: A rotating specials board reflects the daily landings, featuring everything from grilled John Dory and Newlyn Hake to Cornish mussels in white wine and cream.

Accessibility
Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar is a compact venue located at street level. While the entrance is accessible, the interior is quite small with limited floor space, featuring mostly high-stool seating at long tables which may not be suitable for all users.
The outdoor terrace offers more traditional table heights and is easier to navigate for those with mobility aids, though it is subject to weather conditions. Toilets are located in the neighbouring building and may pose an issue for some.
Due to the “no bookings” policy and the small footprint of the restaurant, it can become very crowded; visiting during mid-afternoon or early evening may offer a more spacious experience.
