Fowey rewards walkers more than almost anywhere else on this stretch of coast, a genuine mix of Tudor forts, Trinity House navigation towers, and some of the best river views in Cornwall.

The Hall Walk

What is the Fowey Hall Walk?

A well-loved circular walk around the Fowey estuary, taking in both the Bodinnick and Polruan ferries as part of the loop, with genuinely spectacular river views throughout, partly cared for by the National Trust.

How long does the Hall Walk take?

Around 2 to 3 hours at a comfortable pace, including the ferry crossings, a proper half-day outing rather than a quick stroll.

Does the South West Coast Path pass through Fowey?

Yes, the path runs directly through town, easily picked up from the harbour or Readymoney Cove without needing to drive anywhere first.

Are the coastal paths steep around Fowey?

In places, yes, genuinely so. The stretch out towards Gribbin Head and Lantic Bay involves some proper climbs, so sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness both help.

St Catherine’s Castle & the Gribbin Daymark

How do you get to St Catherine’s Castle?

It’s roughly a three-quarter mile walk from the Readymoney car park, via Readymoney Cove, including a steep climb through woodland on the final stretch.

Who built St Catherine’s Castle?

Henry VIII, built between around 1538 and 1540 as one of a pair of small artillery forts defending Fowey harbour, alongside a matching fort across the water. It was later modified during the Crimean War and again in the Second World War.

Is admission to St Catherine’s Castle free?

Yes, this small English Heritage site is free to explore.

What is the Gribbin Head Daymark?

A striking red and white striped tower, 84 feet tall, built by Trinity House in 1832 to stop ships mistaking St Austell Bay for the deeper waters of Falmouth. It’s a navigation marker rather than a working lighthouse, it carries no light itself. On selected summer Sundays, National Trust volunteers let you climb the 109 steps to the top.

Further Afield

Can you walk from Fowey to Golant?

Yes, a riverside path connects the two, a quieter, gentler walk than the coastal routes, following the estuary rather than the open sea.

Where can you see the best view of the harbour?

The Hall Walk on the Bodinnick and Polruan side gives some of the best views back over Fowey and its harbour, particularly as the path climbs above the water.
