Dining in Fowey is all about the estuary. The town clings to the hillside, meaning almost every restaurant comes with a view of the boats bobbing in the water. It is a place for long, lazy lunches watching the ferry cross to Bodinnick and candlelit dinners in centuries-old merchant houses.
From the legendary “no bookings” burger bar to the best crab sandwich on the quay, here is our curated guide to eating out in Fowey.

Our Top Picks
These three spots define the Fowey dining scene. If you only eat in three places, make it these.
1. Appleton’s (Best for Serious Foodies)
Run by Andy Appleton (formerly of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall), this restaurant brings high-end rustic Italian cooking to Fowey’s main street.
- The Vibe: Stylish, buzzy, and grown-up. It has a fantastic cocktail bar and feels like a proper night out.
- The Food: It’s Italian with a Cornish heart. The pasta is handmade fresh every day. Look out for their signature squid ink linguine with crab—it is widely considered one of the best pasta dishes in the county.
- Good to Know: It is dog-friendly, which is rare for a restaurant of this standard.
2. The Old Quay House (Best for Romance & Views)

If you want white-tablecloth service and the river lapping beneath your feet, this is the place. It is the flagship hotel restaurant of the town.
- The Vibe: Elegant and serene. The terrace sits directly on the sea wall, offering uninterrupted views of the estuary life.
- The Food: A sophisticated menu focusing on local seafood. It is perfect for a special occasion or a romantic dinner. Oysters on the terrace here are a must.
3. Sam’s (Best for Atmosphere)
A Fowey institution since 1988. You haven’t really been to Fowey until you’ve squeezed into a booth at Sam’s.
- The Vibe: Chaotic, loud, and incredibly fun. It’s decked out with memorabilia and has a “pink and green” 1950s/80s retro aesthetic. There is a cocktail bar upstairs while you wait.
- The Food: Simple but done perfectly. Huge “Samburgers”, local scallops, and moules marinière.
- Good to Know: They do not take bookings. You turn up, put your name on the list, and grab a drink in the bar. The wait is part of the ritual.
Casual & Cool
- North Street Kitchen: The “cool younger sibling” of the Fowey food scene. Located in a converted boat garage, it offers communal bench seating and an industrial vibe. The menu is small, daily-changing, and focuses entirely on what the boats have landed that morning. (Note: It is seasonal and closes in winter).

- Captain Hank’s: A quirky “Crab Shack” van located at Berrills Yard. It serves incredible crab sandwiches and mackerel baps that you eat al fresco overlooking the river. It’s the ultimate pitstop for walkers.
- Pinky Murphy’s: A chaotic and colourful cafe that feels like stepping into a maximalist living room. Famous for its massive portions of cake and its relaxed “stay as long as you like” attitude.
Historic Pubs
- The King of Prussia: You can’t miss the pink building on the town quay. Named after the famous smuggler John Carter (who nicknamed himself the King of Prussia), it is steeped in history. It has recently been renovated and serves excellent pub classics right in the centre of the action.

- Havener’s: Located right on the harbour edge, this pub offers arguably the best casual drinking spot in town. The food is reliable pub fare (fish and chips, burgers), but you come here for the tables outside by the water.

Parking for Foodies
- The Main Car Park (Hanson Drive): This is the big one at the top of the hill. Warning: It is a steep walk down into town and a punishing walk back up. Use the shuttle bus if it’s running!
- Caffa Mill: Located near the Bodinnick Ferry. This is a much better option as the walk into town is flat (about 10 minutes), so you don’t have to hike up a cliff after your dinner.
- Avoid the Centre: Do not try to drive into the town centre streets (Fore Street). They are incredibly narrow, often one-way, and you will get stuck.
