Providing an essential and scenic link across the deep-water Fowey Harbour, the Polruan Ferry is a cherished part of local life.

This continuous passenger service connects the steep-clustered village of Polruan with the bustling maritime town of Fowey. Operating every day of the year except Christmas Day, the ferry offers a unique vantage point to admire the yachts, naval vessels, and historic buildings that line the estuary.

Whether you are a hiker tackling the South West Coast Path or a visitor exploring the “Du Maurier” country, the short crossing is a quintessential Cornish experience.

The Experience

The ferry journey is brief—typically taking around five minutes—but it serves as a gateway to some of the most beautiful terrain in South Cornwall.

  • Continuous Service: Boats depart from each side of the harbour approximately every 10 to 15 minutes, meaning there is rarely a long wait to cross.
  • Walking Routes: The ferry provides vital access for those embarking on the famous Hall Walk or continuing along the rugged South West Coast Footpath toward Lantic Bay.
  • Seasonal Routes: In the winter and during summer evenings, the ferry runs to Town Quay in the heart of Fowey. During summer days, it shifts to Whitehouse Slipway, located a short, scenic walk from the main shopping streets.
  • Wildlife & Views: Keep an eye out for cormorants and seals that frequent the harbour, and enjoy the unparalleled views of St Catherine’s Castle at the harbour entrance.

Accessibility

The Polruan Ferry is accessed via stone steps at each of the landing points (Polruan Quay, Town Quay, and Whitehouse Slipway). These steps can be steep and may become slippery when wet or during low tide. Consequently, the ferry is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with significant mobility impairments who cannot navigate steps independently. Staff are generally on hand to assist with pushchairs wherever possible, but passengers should be prepared for the traditional nature of these historic quay landings.
