The Hall Walk runs from Fowey to Polruan, covering approximately 6.9km.
The path itself dates back to at least the sixteenth century, when it was created by the Mohun family of nearby Hall as an ornamental promenade, one of the earliest of its kind anywhere. It later found a place in history books entirely by accident. In August 1644, at the height of the English Civil War, King Charles I was nearly shot while walking this same route.
A short way along stands a memorial to Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, known simply as Q, the novelist and scholar who lived in Fowey from 1891 until his death in 1944. From the point where his memorial stands, the views open out fully across Fowey Harbour and over to Polruan.
The path then runs high along Pont Pill, a tidal creek only navigable at high water, before dropping down into the small hamlet of Pont. Once a working quay, sailing barges here unloaded coal, fertiliser, and limestone bound for the surrounding area. Several of the old buildings survive, including a farmhouse that was once a pub, now let out as a holiday cottage.
From Pont, the path climbs back up through fields and woodland on its way into Polruan, where a passenger ferry crosses back over to Fowey.
Underfoot, expect uneven paths with some short, steep sections, though benches are spaced regularly along the stretch between Bodinnick and Polruan if you need to rest. Dogs are welcome but should be kept under close control, as livestock graze in the fields along the way.
