Tom Bawcock’s Eve & Stargazy Pie
What is Tom Bawcock’s Eve?
A festival held on 23 December, celebrating a local fisherman, Tom Bawcock, who braved fierce storms to catch fish and feed starving villagers during a particularly hard winter, according to local legend.
What is Stargazy Pie?
A traditional pastry dish containing whole pilchards, baked with their heads poking out through the crust, eaten as part of the Tom Bawcock’s Eve celebrations.
Why do the fish heads poke out of Stargazy Pie?
According to the tradition, it was to prove to the starving villagers that there was genuine fish inside the pie, rather than a symbolic gesture with nothing to back it up.
Can you eat Stargazy Pie anywhere else?
It’s mostly unique to Mousehole and served almost exclusively around 23 December, so this is very much a once-a-year, one-village dish rather than something you’ll find on menus elsewhere.
