The Ship Inn

The Ship Inn
Rating: 4 Star
Features: Bar, Beachfront, Breakfast, Pet Friendly, WiFi

Commanding an enviable position directly opposite the granite walls of one of Britain’s most picturesque harbours, The Ship Inn is the quintessential Cornish village pub.

Immortalised by Dylan Thomas as being part of the “loveliest village in England,” this historic St Austell Brewery inn is a place of low-slung oak beams, roaring open fires, and a warm, salty atmosphere that has welcomed travellers and fishermen for centuries. It serves as the beating heart of Mousehole, offering a front-row seat to the village’s famous Christmas lights and the daily rhythm of the working quay.

Accommodation

The inn features eleven stylish, en-suite bedrooms that balance the building’s 18th-century character with contemporary coastal comforts.

  • Harbour Views: Many of the rooms, such as the popular ‘Stargazy’ room, feature large windows looking directly out over the harbour toward St Clement’s Isle.
  • Nautical Design: Interiors are light and airy, incorporating maritime accents, Vi-Spring beds, and luxury toiletries to ensure a restful stay.
  • Room Variety: Options include standard and superior doubles, as well as a family room equipped with bunk beds (suitable for children).
  • Cottage Stay: Several rooms are located in the charming terraced cottage immediately adjacent to the main pub, offering a slightly more private retreat.

Dining & Pub Life

Food and drink at The Ship Inn are a celebration of Cornish heritage, focusing on fresh, locally sourced ingredients and award-winning regional ales.

  • The Menu: Showcases traditional pub classics and seasonal specials, with a highlight being the fresh seafood landed in nearby Newlyn.
  • Award-Winning Ales: As a St Austell Brewery pub, the bar serves a perfectly kept selection of local favourites, including Tribute and Proper Job.
  • Breakfast: Overnight guests enjoy a hearty Cornish breakfast (included in the rate), providing the perfect fuel for a day of coastal hiking.
  • Local Traditions: The pub is a central figure in local festivities, notably Tom Bawcock’s Eve on December 23rd, when the legendary Stargazy Pie is celebrated.

Accessibility

The Ship Inn is an 18th-century building with characteristically narrow spaces and original features. All eleven bedrooms are located on the first and second floors and are accessed via steep, traditional staircases; there is no lift on-site. While the ground-floor bar and restaurant areas are accessible from the harbourfront, they may be snug for larger wheelchairs.

Guests with mobility requirements are encouraged to contact the team directly to discuss the layout before booking.
