Summerleaze is Bude’s main beach, reached in under five minutes on foot from the town centre, with the car park leading straight onto the sand dunes. The wide, sandy beach is sheltered by a substantial breakwater and flanked by the River Neet, its mouth busy with bobbing fishing boats, which makes the setting feel more varied than a simple stretch of open sand. The beach holds a Blue Flag and a Seaside Award, recognition of its water quality and environmental standards.
The standout feature is the Bude Sea Pool, a part man made, part natural saltwater pool set into the rocks at the foot of the cliffs, refreshed daily by the tide. It has been drawing swimmers since the 1930s and offers a calmer alternative to the open sea, though the pool’s rocks are hidden at high tide so it is worth taking care around timing.
Surfing is a big part of Summerleaze’s appeal, with right handers at mid tide and lefts at low tide, and conditions suitable for complete beginners through to experienced surfers, helped by the shelter of the bay when the open coast is too rough. RNLI lifeguards patrol daily through the main summer season, generally from early May to late September, with additional weekend and holiday cover at Easter and October half term, though it is worth checking the exact current year dates before relying on them. Adsurf, a charity offering adaptive surf coaching for people with disabilities and neurodivergent surfers, also operates from the beach.
Dogs must be kept on a lead between 10am and 6pm from the 21st of May to the 30th of September, with no restriction outside those months.
Accessibility here is genuinely good: level access from the car park, a flat viewing area, a Changing Places toilet, and sand wheelchairs available to hire. Facilities include a beach café, an RNLI base and shop, seasonal beach huts to hire, and toilets, with disabled toilets also on site.
