Fistral Beach is Newquay’s, and arguably Cornwall’s, most famous beach, a wide sweep of golden sand set between the headlands of Pentire to the south and Towan to the north, separated from Newquay’s other beaches and feeling slightly apart from the town itself. Backed by dunes and Newquay Golf Club, it sits right at the heart of British surfing, with consistent swells that draw complete beginners and seasoned surfers alike.

A rather moody Fistral Beach

Curiously, the name is thought to come from the Cornish Porth an Vystel, roughly translating as cove of the foul water, though nothing about the beach today lives up to that description. The beach naturally divides into three sections: the main beach and South Fistral, both fairly self explanatory, and Little Fistral, tucked among rocky outcrops at the northern end and only really accessible at low tide.

The south end of the beach is more sheltered and generally better suited to beginners, while the north end offers tougher conditions for more experienced surfers. Further out, beyond Towan Headland, lies the Cribbar, Cornwall’s legendary big wave break, where waves of up to thirty feet have been surfed on the biggest days. Fistral hosts major competitions throughout the year, including the Boardmasters Open each August, an event that has run since 1981, and the International Surfing Centre, built here in 2003, anchors the northern end of the beach with surf shops, equipment hire and places to eat.

RNLI lifeguards patrol daily from the Easter bank holiday through to the end of October, generally between 10am and 6pm, and Fistral is dog friendly all year round with no seasonal restrictions, unusual for a beach of this size and popularity. Beach size varies noticeably with the tide, so it is worth timing a visit for low to mid tide when there is much more sand to enjoy.

Facilities are concentrated at the northern end, with surf schools, board and wetsuit hire, toilets, cafes and restaurants including Rick Stein’s Fistral and The Stable, most with sea views. There is a 250 space car park directly behind the beach, with the Dane Road and Towan Headland car parks as backup options a short walk away when it fills, which it regularly does in peak season.
