Fowey

Fowey

Fowey is a breathtakingly beautiful deep-water port situated within a designated National Landscape on the south coast of Cornwall.

The town is defined by its narrow, medieval streets that wind steeply down to a bustling waterfront, where colourful houses appear to stack directly on top of one another overlooking the estuary. Historically, Fowey was a major medieval trading hub and a strategic naval stronghold, defended by twin blockhouses that once supported a massive chain across the river to bar enemy ships.

It gained further fame as the long-time home of author Daphne du Maurier, whose atmospheric novels were deeply inspired by the hidden creeks and grand estates of the surrounding River Fowey. Today, the town remains a vibrant working port for china clay alongside its status as a premier sailing destination, hosting a world-famous Royal Regatta every August. Visitors can explore the ruins of Catherine’s Castle, enjoy the independent galleries of the town centre, or take the iconic car ferry across to the quiet neighboring village of Bodinnick.
