Today, Polperro is a pedestrianised haven. Without the noise of traffic, you can hear the sounds of the harbour and the sea throughout the village. It is a place to slow down, browse independent art galleries, and explore the rugged coastline that protected this community for centuries.

Whether you want to learn about the notorious Zephaniah Job (the “Smuggler’s Banker”), take a boat trip along the coast, or swim in the tidal pool, here is our curated guide to the best activities in Polperro.

Our Top Picks

These three experiences are essential for understanding the unique character of the village.

1. The Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling & Fishing

Located right on the harbour in an old fish processing house, this museum is small but mighty.

  • The Experience: It holds a fascinating collection of photographs and artifacts that tell the story of the village’s two main industries: pilchards and smuggling. It is the best place to learn about the real history behind the pretty cottages.

2. The Coastal Walk to Talland Bay

Head east along the South West Coast Path for a stunning, moderate walk to the neighbouring bay.

  • The Route: It is about a mile long and offers incredible views back towards Polperro harbour. When you reach Talland Bay, you can swim in the turquoise water and grab a coffee at the beach cafe before walking back.

3. Explore the Art Galleries

Polperro has been a magnet for artists for over a century, rivalling St Ives in its appeal to painters.

  • The Activity: The village is packed with small, independent galleries selling local pottery, glass, and paintings. The Polperro Arts Foundation in the village hall often hosts exhibitions showcasing local talent.

On the Water

  • Boat Trips: Head to the quay to find local boatmen offering short coastal cruises. Seeing the village from the sea gives you a completely different perspective on how hidden the harbour really is.
  • The Tidal Pool: Located at the base of Chapel Cliff (near the harbour entrance), there is a small tidal bathing pool. It is a magical, safe spot for a cold-water dip at low tide.

Unique Shopping

  • Polperro Model Village: A quirky local favourite. It helps you get your bearings by seeing a miniature version of the village you are standing in. It also explores the myths and legends of the area.
  • Independent Crafts: Unlike many seaside towns, Polperro has resisted large chains. You will find shops selling handmade jewellery, Cornish fudge, and nautical antiques.

Parking & The Tram

  • The Tram Ride: Since you park at Crumplehorn (the top of the village), you have the option to take the “Polperro Tram” (a converted electric float) down to the harbour. It is a fun, bumpy ride that saves your legs for the coast path.
  • Access: The streets are cobbled and steep in places. Wear comfortable shoes—this is not a place for heels!
