Dining in Polperro is all about atmosphere. You can eat in smugglers’ cottages that date back to the 16th century, sit on rooftop terraces watching the tide come in, or grab a crab sandwich from a shack on the quay. Because the village is pedestrianised, the pace is slower, and the pubs are the true living rooms of the community.

From the oldest pub in the village to fine dining in a merchant’s house, here is our curated guide to eating out in Polperro.

Our Top Picks

These three spots capture the heart and soul of the village.

1. The Three Pilchards (Best for History & Rooftop Views)

This is the oldest pub in Polperro, and it oozes character. It is famous for its rooftop beer garden which offers incredible views over the harbour—perfect for a sunny afternoon.

  • The Vibe: Historic, friendly, and deeply local. It is heavily dog-friendly and steeped in smuggling tales.
  • The Food: Their signature “Famous Fish Pie” is legendary (topped with cheddar mash), and their Sunday Roasts are widely considered the best in the village.
  • Good to Know: They don’t take bookings, so turn up early to grab a spot on the roof.

2. The Blue Peter Inn (Best for Atmosphere)

Nestled on the quay, “The Blue” is an award-winning pub that feels like the beating heart of the village.

  • The Vibe: Lively, cramped, and incredibly fun. There is often live music, and the walls are covered in nautical memorabilia.
  • The Food: It is gastro-pub quality without the pretension. The seafood platter and their homemade curries are standout dishes.
  • Good to Know: Like The Three Pilchards, they operate a “walk-ins only” policy. Be prepared to wait with a pint in hand—it is worth it.

3. Priscilla’s (Best for Local Seafood)

Formerly known as *Michelle’s*, this restaurant is tucked away on The Green. It is run by a local fishing family, meaning the provenance of the food is unbeatable.

  • The Vibe: Intimate and cosy. It feels like a proper dining room.
  • The Food: They serve fish and scallops caught by their own boats (*Karen Marie* and *Celestrial Dawn*). If lobster is on the menu, order it—it was likely swimming in the bay that morning.

Casual & Quirky

  • The House on the Props: You can’t miss this building—it is literally propped up on stilts over the river. It’s a fantastic tea room and restaurant known for its “Proper Job” breakfasts and homemade cakes. The beams inside are salvaged from old shipwrecks.
  • Polperro Bakery: The smell of baking hits you as soon as you walk up the main street. They are famous for their steak and stilton pasties. Grab one to go and eat it on the harbour wall.
  • Kitty’s Lobster, Crab & Seafood Shack: Located right on the quay edge, this is the ultimate al fresco spot. They serve dressed crab and seafood platters in takeaway boxes. It’s simple, fresh, and delicious.

Parking for Foodies

  • The Main Car Park: You cannot drive into the village centre. You must park at the main car park at the top of the valley (Crumplehorn).
  • The Tram: From the car park, you can walk down (approx. 15-20 mins) or catch the electric “tram” (bus) that shuttles visitors into the village square. If you are heading out for dinner, check when the last tram runs, or be prepared for the uphill walk back!
