Tucked along the south coast near Penzance, Mousehole (pronounced Mowzel) is one of Cornwall’s most picturesque fishing villages. With its narrow granite lanes, historic harbour, and deep-rooted traditions, it perfectly captures the charm of old Cornwall.

  1. Ancient fishing port – Mousehole was once one of Cornwall’s most important fishing ports, known for pilchard fishing and exporting catches as far as France and Spain.
  2. Origin of the name – The village’s name is thought to come from a nearby sea cave shaped like a mouse hole, although local legend adds a few colourful interpretations of its origin.
  3. Elizabethan attack – In 1595, Mousehole was almost completely destroyed by Spanish raiders led by Carlos de Amesquita. Only one building, the Keigwin Arms (now a private house), survived.
  4. Tom Bawcock’s Eve – Each December, Mousehole celebrates this unique local festival, honouring a fisherman who, according to legend, braved stormy seas to bring food to the starving villagers.
  5. The Stargazy Pie – During Tom Bawcock’s Eve, villagers bake the famous Stargazy Pie, a fish pie with pilchard heads poking through the crust, symbolising good fortune and bravery.
  6. Christmas lights – Mousehole is world-famous for its dazzling harbour Christmas lights, a tradition that began in 1963 and now attracts thousands of visitors each winter.
  7. Dylan Thomas connection – The poet Dylan Thomas called Mousehole “the loveliest village in England” when he visited with his wife Caitlin in the 1930s.
  8. Mousehole Cat legend – The beloved children’s book The Mousehole Cat by Antonia Barber was inspired by the tale of Tom Bawcock and his heroic cat, Mowzer.
  9. Protected harbour – Mousehole’s small granite harbour, built in the 14th century, shelters traditional fishing boats and offers some of the calmest waters on Cornwall’s rugged south coast.
  10. Wildlife and walks – The surrounding coastline is home to seals, seabirds, and dolphins, while the South West Coast Path offers stunning walks towards Newlyn and Lamorna Cove.

With its storybook harbour, rich folklore, and enduring community spirit, Mousehole is one of those rare Cornish villages that still feels timeless, a place where history and charm meet beside the sea.
