St Ives is a genuinely dog-friendly town: you’ll see dogs in cafés, galleries and most pubs without a second glance. The one thing to get right is the seasonal beach restrictions, which catch out more visitors than almost anything else on this list. Get the dates straight and the rest of your trip is easy.
Beach Rules for Dogs
Are dogs allowed on St Ives beaches?
Yes. Every beach in St Ives welcomes dogs outside the restricted summer hours, and a handful stay dog-friendly all year round. The key is knowing which beach you’re on and what time of year it is, since the rules aren’t the same across all of them.
What are the summer dog ban dates and times?
Cornwall Council’s Dog Control Order sets two different restriction periods for beaches in and around St Ives:
- Carbis Bay, Porthmeor and Porthminster: dogs are not permitted between 10am and 6pm, 15 May to 30 September.
- St Ives Harbour Beach and Porthgwidden: dogs are not permitted between 10am and 6pm, 1 July to 31 August.
Outside those dates and hours, dogs are welcome on all of these beaches. Early mornings and evenings in high summer are actually a lovely time for a beach walk with a dog. Enforcement officers do patrol during the restriction periods, and breaches can carry a fixed penalty notice, so it’s worth sticking to the rules rather than chancing it.
Is Porthminster beach dog-friendly in the winter?
Yes, fully. Porthminster’s restriction only runs from 15 May to 30 September, so outside that window your dog can enjoy the whole beach at any time of day.
Which St Ives beach allows dogs all year round?
Bamaluz Beach, tucked between the harbour and Porthgwidden and only fully revealed at low tide, is dog-friendly all year with no time restrictions. The north side of Smeaton’s Pier, and Lambeth Walk, are also dog-friendly year-round.
Out & About With Your Dog
Can I take my dog on the scenic branch line train?
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on GWR branch line services, usually free of charge when accompanied by a fare-paying adult, though it’s worth checking current GWR conditions if you’re travelling with a larger dog or at a particularly busy time.
Are the restaurants and pubs in St Ives dog-friendly?
Many are, particularly pubs and more casual cafés, especially in outdoor seating areas. It varies place to place though, so it’s always worth a quick check or a call ahead if you’re planning to eat somewhere specific with your dog in tow.
Where is the nearest vet if my dog gets sick on holiday?
There are veterinary practices serving the St Ives and wider Penwith area. If your dog needs urgent attention, search for the nearest registered vet or out-of-hours emergency practice as soon as you notice a problem, rather than waiting to see if it resolves. It’s worth saving a local vet’s number to your phone before you travel.
Is the coast path to Zennor safe for dogs off-lead?
The St Ives to Zennor stretch of the South West Coast Path is rugged, with cliff edges, boulder sections and livestock fields in places, so it’s sensible to keep dogs on a lead for most of the route unless you’re confident they’re completely reliable around sudden drops and animals. It’s a beautiful walk, but not one to do on autopilot with a dog that likes to wander.
