Hayle
Hayle is a fascinating coastal town situated on the edge of St Ives Bay, uniquely defined by its dual identity as an industrial powerhouse and a premier natural sanctuary.
Historically, the town was a global leader during the Industrial Revolution, serving as a vital port for the export of copper and tin while housing world-renowned iron foundries like Harvey’s of Hayle. This rich engineering legacy earned the town its status as a key part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage site, with its massive granite quays still standing as a testament to its Victorian prosperity.
Today, Hayle is perhaps most famous for “Three Miles of Golden Sands,” a breathtaking stretch of beach that includes the towering dunes of Gwithian and the surfers’ paradise of Godrevy. The Hayle Estuary is also a world-class destination for birdwatchers, being the most southerly glacier-carved estuary in the UK and an important RSPB nature reserve for migratory species. Visitors can enjoy a mix of heritage trails, independent shops, and famous local pasties, all while taking in some of the most expansive coastal views in the West Country.
