Padstow is famous for its food, but it is also one of the best active bases in Cornwall. It sits at the start of the Camel Trail, offers some of the safest estuary waters for boating, and is surrounded by a ring of “Seven Bays” that offer a different beach for every day of the week.

Whether you want to cycle a flat railway line, watch baby lobsters being hatched, or hike to the infamous ‘Doom Bar’, here is our curated guide to the best activities in Padstow.

Our Top Picks

These three experiences are essential to the Padstow lifestyle.

1. Cycle the Camel Trail

This is arguably the most famous cycle route in the UK. It follows a disused railway line along the estuary, meaning it is completely flat and traffic-free.

  • The Route: The most popular section is Padstow to Wadebridge (5.5 miles each way). It offers stunning views across the water that you can’t see from the road.
  • The Gear: You don’t need your own bike. Padstow Cycle Hire (at the start of the trail) has hundreds of bikes, including electric ones and trailers for dogs/kids.

2. The National Lobster Hatchery

Located right on the quayside, this is a marine conservation centre with a difference. It is the only one of its kind in the world.

  • The Experience: You can see baby lobsters at every stage of their development, from microscopic larvae to juveniles ready for release. It’s fascinating, educational, and vital for the local fishing industry.
  • Good to Know: It’s a great rainy-day activity and doesn’t take all day (allow 45–60 minutes).

3. Take the Ferry to Rock

Hop on the Black Tor ferry that runs across the river to the village of Rock (often called “Chelsea-on-Sea” due to its celebrity residents).

  • The Journey: It takes about 10 minutes and drops you on the sandy beach at Rock.
  • The Activity: Walk along the dunes to Daymer Bay, or grab a drink at The Mariners (Paul Ainsworth’s pub) overlooking the water before sailing back.

Walks & Views

Stepper Point & The Doom Bar

Walk north from the harbour along the coast path to reach Stepper Point. This is the headland that guards the entrance to the estuary.

  • The View: You get a bird’s-eye view of the infamous ‘Doom Bar’—a sandbank that has wrecked hundreds of ships over the centuries. On a windy day, the waves crashing here are spectacular.

Prideaux Place

An Elizabethan manor house sitting on the hill above Padstow. It has been in the same family since 1592.

  • The Visit: The house is beautiful (and often used as a film set), but the deer park is the real highlight. You can often see the herd grazing with the estuary in the background.

On the Water

  • Padstow Sealife Safaris: These high-speed RIB boat trips leave from the harbour and head out into the Atlantic. Depending on the season, you can spot seals, dolphins, and even puffins (near Puffin Island).
  • Speedboat Rides: For a quick adrenaline fix, the “Thunder” speedboat offers short, fast blasts around the estuary. Great fun for teenagers.

Nearby Beaches

Padstow town doesn’t have a beach, but you can walk to them easily.

  • St George’s Well (Harbour Cove): A huge expanse of sand at low tide. It is much quieter than the other beaches because there is no car park right next to it (it’s a 20-minute walk from town).
  • Trevone Bay: A short drive (or coastal walk) away. It has a sandy beach for lounging and a rocky beach for crab hunting.

Parking Tips

  • Avoid the Harbour: Unless it is winter, trying to park on the harbour is stressful.
  • The Lawns Car Park: Located on the hill, this is large and usually has space.
  • Park & Ride: The most relaxing option. Park in the field at the top of town and catch the bus down. It runs frequently and saves navigating the narrow streets.
