Winter is for purists. It’s quiet, moody, and incredibly cosy. You’ll find empty beaches, roaring fires in pubs, and a twinkling harbour at Christmas.

Weather & Atmosphere

  • What to expect: Cool, windy, and occasionally wet, but St Ives rarely sees snow/frost due to the sea air.
  • Average Temps: 5°C – 9°C.
  • Vibe: Magical, slow-paced, and local.

Attractions & Dining

  • Christmas: St Ives is famous for its Christmas Lights and the New Year’s Eve Party, where the streets fill with revellers in fancy dress (one of the biggest parties in the UK!).
  • Open/Closed:
    • Tate St Ives: Usually remains open (check Mondays).
    • Restaurants: Some establishments take a break in January/February for refurbishments. Always check Google Maps or social media before heading out.
  • Video Opportunity: The Christmas lights reflecting in the water of the harbour at high tide is a must-capture shot.

Walks & Beaches

  • Dog Bans: NONE. All beaches are dog-friendly all day long. It is paradise for dog owners.
  • Walks: A blustery walk on Porthmeor followed by a hot chocolate in the café is a winter tradition.

Transport & Parking

  • Parking: Plenty of spaces available. You can usually park right in the town (e.g., The Sloop or Island car parks) without issue.
  • Traffic Trial (Active Winter 2025/26): The traffic trial will likely be in full effect.
    • Access to the harbour front by car may be restricted during the day.
    • Use the main car parks on the perimeter (Trenwith) if you are unsure of the new one-way systems.
  • Trains: Service continues year-round, connecting to the mainline at St Erth.
