Our Top Picks

These three spots offer the most memorable dining experiences in the village.

1. The Idle Rocks (Best for Modern Luxury)

Perched on the rocks at the harbour edge, this hotel restaurant offers a sensory experience. It is modern, chic, and focused on storytelling through food.

  • The Vibe: Relaxed luxury. The terrace is arguably the best spot in the village for a gin and tonic, while the restaurant feels airy and coastal.
  • The Food: Executive Chef Dorian Janmaat brings exceptional skill to the table. Expect refined dishes like Cornish crab with granny smith apple, or locally caught turbot. It is perfect for a special occasion.

2. Hotel Tresanton (Best for Classics)

Owned by Olga Polizzi, this is the hotel that put St Mawes on the luxury map. The dining room (with its famous mosaic floor) is iconic.

  • The Vibe: Mediterranean glamour meets Cornish charm. It feels exclusive but welcoming. In summer, the BBQ lunches on the terrace are legendary.
  • The Food: Unfussy, high-quality Italian-Cornish fusion. They rely on the very best ingredients, often grilled simply to let the flavours shine. The Porthilly oysters here are a must.

3. The Watch House (Best for Casual Seafood)

Located right in the square overlooking the harbour, The Watch House is accessible, friendly, and consistently delicious.

  • The Vibe: Downstairs is a bustling takeaway/hatch, while the upstairs restaurant is a cool, white-washed bistro with great views.
  • The Food: They do arguably the best fish and chips in the village (using local ale batter). The bistro menu features whole roasted fish, moules marinière, and great steaks.

Pubs & Bakeries

  • The Rising Sun: Located on the harbour front, this is a proper pub with a fantastic terrace. It’s the place to go for a pint of Tribute and a hearty crab sandwich. The atmosphere is lively and dog-friendly.
  • The Victory Inn: Tucked away in the backstreets, this is the oldest pub in St Mawes. It is a traditional “local” with low beams and a cosy feel, serving solid pub classics.
  • St Mawes Bakery: You will smell the pasties before you see the shop. Located on the quay, this is the spot for a traditional Cornish pasty or a saffron bun to eat while sitting on the harbour wall.

Parking for Foodies

  • The Quay Car Park: This is right in the centre of the village. It is incredibly convenient for The Watch House and The Rising Sun but fills up instantly in summer.
  • Main Car Park: Located behind the Rising Sun (follow the signs up the hill slightly). It is a large long-stay car park. It is a short walk down to the restaurants.
