St Austell is a town with a story to tell. It was once the gold rush capital of Cornwall (white gold, that is—china clay). Today, it is a bustling market town that serves as the perfect gateway to the Clay Country. It is a place where you can cycle through lunar landscapes, tour a Victorian brewery, or discover secret gardens hidden in the valleys.

Whether you want to learn the art of brewing, hike up a clay tip for panoramic views, or relax on a south-facing beach, here is our curated guide to the best activities in St Austell.

Our Top Picks

These three experiences are the highlights of the town.

1. St Austell Brewery Experience

You cannot visit St Austell without paying homage to its most famous export: Tribute Ale. The Victorian brewery sits proudly at the top of the town.

  • The Visit: The visitor centre is fantastic. You can take a guided tour to see the brewing process (and smell the hops), explore the interactive museum, and, of course, enjoy a tasting session in the Hicks Bar.
  • Good to Know: The food in the Hicks Bar is excellent, making it a great lunch spot.

2. Wheal Martyn Clay Works

Located just outside the town centre (in Carthew), this is the UK’s only china clay mining museum.

  • The Experience: It is set within 26 acres of woodland and industrial remains. You can see the giant waterwheels, explore the vintage trucks, and walk up to the viewing platform to look down into a working open-cast clay pit. It is fascinating and eerily beautiful.

3. Pinetum Gardens

Often overshadowed by Heligan and Eden, Pinetum is a hidden gem located on the outskirts of the town.

  • The Gardens: It is a 30-acre garden that feels incredibly peaceful. It features ten distinct garden styles, including a Japanese garden and a pinetum (conifer collection). It is rarely crowded, making it a perfect sanctuary.

The Coast & Outdoors

Porthpean Beach

A short drive from the town centre, Porthpean is a sheltered, sandy cove that is popular with locals.

  • The Vibe: It is safer and calmer than the north coast beaches, making it ideal for swimming and paddleboarding. The cliffs here are also great for fossil hunting.

The Clay Trails

St Austell is the hub for these unique cycling and walking routes.

  • The Activity: Rent a bike (or walk) and explore the trails that wind around the china clay pits. The contrast between the turquoise dams and the white peaks is surreal. The view from the top of the trails looks like the surface of the moon.

Shopping & Cinema

  • White River Place: This is the modern heart of the town centre. It houses the cinema, high-street shops, and cafes. It is a good option for a rainy day.
  • The Market House: For something more traditional, visit the historic Market House. It has a stunning glass roof and hosts independent stalls selling antiques, crafts, and plants.

Parking Tips

  • Priory Car Park: A large, central car park that gives easy access to the church and the top of Fore Street.
  • Wheal Martyn: If you are visiting the museum, they have their own free car park for visitors.
