Saltash

Saltash

Saltash is famously known as the “Gateway to Cornwall.”

It sits on the west bank of the River Tamar. Historically, the town was a vital crossing point for centuries. It gained strategic importance as a major river port and a center for limestone quarrying. The town’s skyline is dominated by the Royal Albert Bridge.

This engineering marvel was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1859. Next to it stands the Tamar Bridge, which connects the town to Plymouth. Saltash is home to Mary Newman’s Cottage.

This Elizabethan building was the home of Sir Francis Drake’s first wife. The town center features steep streets that lead down to a picturesque waterfront. This area is now popular for sailing and rowing. Saltash offers a unique blend of industrial heritage and natural beauty.

It serves as a perfect starting point for exploring the Tamar Valley.
