Charlestown is unique because it remains unspoilt. There are no neon signs or modern developments on the harbour front. It is a place to explore maritime history, hunt for sea glass on the pebble beaches, and imagine the days when this tiny port exported copper and china clay to the world.

Whether you want to walk through underground tunnels, swim in crystal clear waters, or simply sit on the harbour wall and watch the world go by, here is our curated guide to the best activities in Charlestown.

Our Top Picks

These three experiences define a visit to this historic port.

1. The Shipwreck Treasure Museum

This isn’t your average local museum. It houses over 8,000 artifacts recovered from shipwrecks around the world, from the Titanic to the Spanish Armada.

  • The Highlight: The museum sits above a network of underground clay tunnels that were once used to transport china clay to the ships. You can walk through these eerie, lit tunnels, which eventually emerge onto a viewing platform over the harbour.

2. Walk the Harbour Walls & Tall Ships

The harbour is the star of the show. It is the home port for a fleet of classic square-riggers.

  • The Experience: You can walk along the inner quay and get up close to these magnificent vessels. While you usually can’t go aboard (unless there is a special event), seeing the rigging and masts up close is spectacular. It is the closest you will get to the 18th century.

3. Sea Glass Hunting on the Beaches

Charlestown has two small pebble beaches, one on either side of the harbour entrance.

  • The Activity: Because of the harbour’s industrial past and the old china clay works, the beaches are famous for sea glass and historic pottery shards. It is a beachcomber’s paradise. The water here is also often incredibly clear for swimming, though it shelves deeply quite quickly.

Coastal Walks

Walk to Porthpean

Head south along the coast path (keep the sea on your left) for a stunning short walk to Porthpean Beach.

  • The Walk: It takes about 20-30 minutes. Porthpean is a sandy beach (unlike Charlestown’s pebbles) and is popular with families and kayakers. The cliff views looking back at the tall ships are fantastic.

Walk to Carlyon Bay

Head north (sea on your right) to discover the vast stretch of Carlyon Bay.

  • The Vibe: This is a fascinating beach with a complex history of development, but the sheer scale of the bay is impressive. It is a great spot to stretch your legs away from the harbour crowds.

Film & TV

  • Poldark Spotting: Charlestown stood in for Truro Harbour in the BBC series. Fans will recognise the slipway and the inner harbour instantly. It is arguably the most recognisable location from the show.

Parking Tips

  • Holmbush Car Park: As with the restaurants, we recommend the large Holmbush car park at the top of the village. It is easier to access and guarantees a space.
  • The Gradient: Charlestown is steep. If you are planning to walk the coast path, remember that you start at sea level in the harbour and immediately have to climb!
