Polruan

Polruan is a remarkably steep and ancient mariner village situated at the mouth of the River Fowey, directly opposite the busier town of Fowey.

Bounded on three sides by water; Pont Creek, the River Fowey, and the English Channel; it has historically served as a strategic defensive outpost and a premier hub for Cornish shipbuilding.

The village is defined by its maze of narrow alleyways and slate-hung cottages that climb the hillside toward the 8th-century ruins of St Saviour’s Chapel, which once served as a vital landmark for ships entering the harbour.

Unlike its “money side” neighbor across the water, Polruan retains a rugged, industrious character, anchored by its well-preserved 14th-century blockhouse and a thriving boatyard that continues a centuries-old tradition of maritime craftsmanship.
