Each winter, the National Trust estate of Cotehele, near Calstock in Cornwall, transforms into one of the most enchanting festive sights in the county. The highlight is the spectacular 60-foot flower garland that drapes through the Tudor Great Hall, a much-loved tradition that has been part of Cotehele’s Christmas celebrations since 1956.
A floral masterpiece
Every single bloom in the garland is grown on the estate’s grounds. The gardeners begin sowing seeds early in the year, harvesting the flowers throughout summer before carefully drying them for use in November. It’s a meticulous, year-round effort that results in a breathtaking display of natural colour and craftsmanship. Depending on the growing season, the garland can include anywhere from 20,000 to over 30,000 flowers, no two years ever look the same.
As the seasons change and winter approaches, the Great Hall fills with the scent of greenery and the soft hues of thousands of Cornish-grown blooms, each one individually tied into place by the talented team of gardeners and volunteers.

Visitors can watch the process unfold during November, when the team begins building the garland in stages before it’s completed and unveiled later in the month.

There’s no need to book in advance unless you’re visiting with a large group, and the house, gardens, and café are all open as usual.
