Tucked along Cornwall’s south coast between Fowey and St Austell, Par is a small but historically significant village known for its beach, harbour, and industrial heritage. Once a hub for shipping and china clay, today it’s a peaceful coastal spot loved by walkers and families.

  1. Industrial roots – Par grew rapidly in the 19th century thanks to the china clay industry and the nearby Par Harbour, which was developed by local entrepreneur Joseph Austen (later known as Joseph Treffry).
  2. Par Harbour – Built in the 1820s, Par Harbour became one of Cornwall’s busiest industrial ports, exporting china clay and tin to destinations across the world.
  3. Treffry Viaduct link – The same Joseph Treffry who developed Par Harbour also built the Treffry Viaduct at Luxulyan, an impressive feat of engineering that helped move clay from inland quarries to the coast.
  4. Par Sands Beach – Par’s long, flat beach is a favourite with families and dog walkers. Its shallow waters make it ideal for paddling, and it’s one of the few sandy stretches in this part of Cornwall.
  5. Wildlife haven – Just behind the beach lies Par Sands Nature Reserve, a freshwater lake and reedbed area that attracts a wide range of birds, including herons, swans, and kingfishers.
  6. The South West Coast Path – The famous coastal trail passes right through Par, offering beautiful walks towards Polkerris in one direction and Carlyon Bay in the other.
  7. Railway connections – Par Station is a key junction on the Cornish Main Line and is also the starting point of the scenic Atlantic Coast Line to Newquay.
  8. Historic pubs – Par is home to traditional Cornish pubs such as the Ship Inn, providing a cosy spot to enjoy local ales and hearty food after a day at the beach.
  9. Nearby attractions – Par is just a short drive from the Eden Project, one of Cornwall’s most popular tourist attractions, and the historic port of Charlestown.
  10. Community spirit – Despite its small size, Par has a close-knit community with local events, markets, and a strong connection to its heritage and surrounding landscape.

Whether you’re stopping off on the coastal path or spending a few days exploring the area, Par offers a mix of industrial history, coastal charm, and relaxed Cornish atmosphere that’s easy to enjoy.
