Redruth is a town with a story to tell. Once the richest square mile in the world during the copper boom, it is now the capital of Cornish mining heritage. While it might lack the beaches of St Ives, it makes up for it with incredible architecture, fascinating museums, and some of the best walking trails in the county.

From climbing ancient hills to see the coast on both sides of Cornwall to discovering the secrets of the Cornish diaspora, here is our curated guide to the best activities in Redruth.

Our Top Picks

These three experiences define the unique character of the town and its landscape.

1. Kresen Kernow

Built on the site of the former Redruth Brewery, Kresen Kernow is Cornwall’s national archive centre and a stunning piece of modern architecture.

  • The Visit: Even if you aren’t researching your family tree, it is worth visiting to see the building. The blend of the old brewhouse brickwork with modern glass is spectacular.
  • The Exhibitions: They host rotating exhibitions about Cornish history, from mining disasters to local legends. It is free to enter and has a lovely cafe.

2. King Edward Mine Museum

Located just outside the town, King Edward Mine is arguably the best-preserved mine site in Cornwall.

  • The Experience: Unlike other museums, the machinery here still works. You can see the Californian Stamps thundering away, processing tin just as they did a century ago.
  • The Guides: The tours are often run by former miners or experts who bring the geology and engineering to life. It is an authentic, gritty look at the industry that shaped the world.

3. Climb Carn Brea

The rocky hill of Carn Brea dominates the skyline of Redruth. It is a place of legends, giants, and history.

  • The Walk: You can drive part of the way up, but the walk from the bottom gives you the full experience. At the top, you will find the huge Basset Monument and Carn Brea Castle (now a restaurant).
  • The View: On a clear day, you can see from St Ives Bay on the north coast to the Lizard Peninsula on the south. It is one of the best viewpoints in Cornwall.

Active & Outdoors

The Great Flat Lode Trail

This 7.5-mile circular trail is one of the most famous walks in the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.

  • The Route: It circles Carn Brea, passing a surreal landscape of abandoned engine houses and mine stacks. It is largely flat (hence the name) and perfect for mountain biking or a family walk.

Gwennap Pit

A short drive from the town centre in Busveal, Gwennap Pit is a remarkable open-air amphitheatre.

  • The History: It was the favourite preaching place of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. The acoustics are perfect—you can hear a whisper from the bottom tier at the very top. It is a serene and spiritual place to sit.

Culture & Entertainment

  • The Regal Theatre: This Art Deco cinema and theatre is the cultural hub of the town. The Regal shows the latest blockbusters alongside live comedy and music. It has been beautifully restored and retains its vintage charm.
  • Redruth Town Trail: Pick up a map from the library and walk the town trail. Look up above the shop fronts on Fore Street—the Victorian and Georgian architecture is surprisingly grand, hinting at the town’s wealthy past.

Parking Tips

  • New Cut Car Park: Located in the centre (TR15 1AF), this is the best spot for visiting Kresen Kernow and the high street shops.
  • Flowerpot Chapel: A handy car park (TR15 2AE) if you are planning to walk towards the station or the Regal Theatre.
